When we first laid eyes on the space that is now Handprints Killara, we saw such possibilities for rich learning spaces and value in its wide-open spaces. When we learnt that our tender had been approved by the department of education, we were keen to capitalise on the potential of the space and turn it into a Handprints community.

Handprints Killara has been open since February 2016 and has gone from strength to strength. It went through an entire yard renovation, new resources were purchased indoors, and the educators were inspired to teach under the Handprints philosophy. The easiest way to describe our Killara centre is open, peaceful and green. It’s a wonderful place to play and learn. The educators at this service have heart and they care about enhancing learning opportunities for children each day. The Nursery room is a place of tenderness, yet also of autonomy and growth. The Junior Preschool is where we learn patience, kindness and understanding, while also appreciating the need for messy and rambunctious play. Where as the Preschool promote a balance of independence and collaboration while enhancing the children’s love for learning, research and investigation.

Handprints Killara caters for fifty-eight children across three classrooms. The centre has a lot of space within the classrooms, as well as a dining room, a library space and an abundance of vegetable gardens. Located next door to the public school we have a strong connection with the local school and their teachers in preparing children to transition to school.
Meet Deb, Our Killara Director:
I have a Bachelor of Education (Birth to five years) and have had about 20 years’ experience as an Early Childhood Educator. My experience includes working internationally – UK (London and Scotland) and Canada – where I got a chance to explore a variety of different childcare settings and culture. I enjoy travelling, spending time with my niece and nephew, and visiting new cafes/restaurants around Sydney.
I have been a Director at Handprints ELC Killara since mid 2016 and I am extremely lucky to work with such a dedicated group of Educators.
My goal is to write children’s books one day.
““The Handprints family of educators, children and families are wonderful.
It has been a very supportive and caring partnership. We love the weekly music sessions, obstacle courses and encouragement to be outdoors engaged in physical activities, messy play, art, cooking and science experiments, family days (celebrating Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day etc) to mention a few. The date nights and dinner pick-ups have been extra bonuses.
